Do you shoot alot of indoor material…? or do you shoot in cloudy places where natural light is hard to come by…? do you shoot close moving things…? such as birds, insects…etc. these are situations where you need flash. there is no hiding from it. even with the steadiest of hands or a tripod you will always run into motion blur. you need to keep your shutter speed up in order to capture that moment. thats where your flash comes in. now there is a huge difference between a point and shoot flash vs a pop up flash on a dslr. point and shoot flash are very limited. not alot of power behind them then you deal with flash burn. or white outs. where the objects are almost like ghostly white. and you have limited distance. 5 ft max and in near black conditions try to be 3 ft no more or else you wont capture your image. if you get closer than that you will not like the results guaranteed. with a pop up flash on a dslr you have a little more power behind you and you can reach 10 ft easily, but you can also play with your iso and rely less on light and flash but expect more grainy images. dont get me wrong point and shoot cameras for the most part have iso sensitivity options, but to be honest i believe they are mostly for show. sorry to be bias but the dslr gives you the best of the best. just takes a little more work.
you can also get external flashes which extend your distance anywhere from 25 ft to over 40ft. then you can also get into wireless flashes and multiple flashes. it all depends on your application. flashes are like math equations but dont be frightened cause you can just set it to fill flash and most cameras will communicate with the flash and you will pull a stellar shot. if you are more skilled and have the option you can go wireless and bounce your flash off various objects and you will achieve interesting results.
these are just a few ideas for people. all 3 that are currently reading this blog with some kind of intent on using my advice lol.
anyways my bottom line is that it never hurts to have a flash in ur arsenal of tools for photography you can always find yourself in situations where you are using your flash so it never is a bad idea to have one or to properly learn to use one. it also doesnt hurt to snap a couple useless shots to get the results you are looking forward. this is the beauty of digital limitless possibilities without consequence.
newho enough from me. have a nice friday for catholics good friday.
keep smiling
