the ultimate yelp

yelp? pardon me?

I was introduced to the review website yelp the other day by some coworkers and I can say that I am fully addicted. It’s nice to be able to give your honest review of an establishment that you’ve visited. Good or bad, it’s fun to let others know whether to avoid or flock to a restaurant or retail local. There are too many times when I have been invited out to lunch only to be terribly disappointed by the food or the service, and; I’m not a picky person when it comes to food.

It’s quite the task to try and remember that dish you tried months ago, or the terrible service that burned your wallet and patience at that one photography shop… I believe it’s in everyone’s best interest to write at least one review. You don’t need to be a professional write to give a random stranger a heads up about bad service, or a great meal. The more reviews, the easier the choice to make. This is the age of social media correct?

Ironically enough, I’m writing a review about a review website and I can give it an 9/10 :P

I’m on a Boat

I was voluntold a while back at work that I had to join the “social committee”…I recluctantly accepted.

So far we have planned two events and last nights was a boat cruise on a ship called Kajama, on lake Ontario.  It was basically what I like to call a pirate ship, it was pretty awesome.

I was not, I repeat NOT excited about it at all, but it ended up being a freakin blast.  I didn’t take any pictures but other people did, and loaded our emails and server with it.

I decided to play a little trick on a buddy co-worker of mine (JM), he’s a cool kid and is getting married soon, so to celebrate, I made him a poster, check it out!

I know what you are thinking, and the answer is no, I don’t have a lot of time on my hands.  Sometimes it is just worth it to play a prank to make people smile a little bit more.

Old spice man, you  made my day.

RANT – terrible stock photography

Smug, confidently crossed arms with smirks only mothers could tolerate, people cut out on white backgrounds and corporate high fiving. These photos are usually found on 404 redirects, cheap weight loss solution websites, hair removal ads in free newspapers, and bad designers profiles around the globe. I can’t count the times I have accidentally misspelled  a web URL to wind up with the woman on the left glaring into my soul.

I’ve compiled a list of actions to take when dealing with terrible stock photography.

a) Stop using these photos, explain alternative ways to convey your message.
b) If your client refuses by mentioning, “Now the page lacks a human element, it’s too cold” , drop the client.

On a recent subway ride home, I saw the same set of stock images in three, THREE separate ads. One ad was for a weight loss supplement, another for an obscure college in Alberta, and finally; an ad for a one use laser hair removal procedure.

The use of these images is just bad practice. Customers want to picture themselves with your product, not a random stranger smiling and staring directly into your mind.  There are several ways to convey your message to the public. With the thinking that these images “pop” and tell your prospective buyer, “Hey, I can be THAT happy when I buy this product? Where to I swipe???” , is not the right way to go about this whole “design” thing.

Do people actually do this?

Screengrab from an Istockphoto set dump... grrr

If you come across one of these images, please post them in the comments!
